Any Other Normal Day

You were only going to watch porn like any other normal day today…

A handsome man burst out of the monitor and tried to kill you, then your childhood friend appeared just in time and died trying to save you!

In the middle of the chaos, the handsome man who saved you says that he’s a devil, and that the one trying to kill you is an angel…

……

Guys, I can’t write a better start to explaining the premise of this game than Prettybusy already did. You were just trying to watch some porn, and an angel shows up to kill you. Luckily, a devil – Satan himself – appears and protects you from certain death.

Grieving and bereaved of your childhood friend, you make a deal with Satan to bring your friend back to life, agreeing to letting him take you to Hell. In Hell, you learn about the war that is happening between Heaven and Hell, and what you have to do with it.

The Contract is Made

Prettybusy promises a whole host of devils to diddle as the game expands on subsequent content releases. And while that is certainly exciting, there are only four of the Seven Deadly Sins that have been released on… release. These may be the only ‘romanceable’ characters at the moment, but the game is too new for me to make a call on that.

There have been multiple ‘lesser’ devils revealed as well, but if hentai gacha games have taught me anything, it’s that if they don’t get the highest card rating, you don’t get a chance at seeing them naked. So far, the big four are the only cards I’ve seen with a L rating, but we’ll get into that in gameplay.

Main Character (MC)

Name: Unnamed (8 letters or less)
Pronouns: She/Her or He/Him (selectable on start)

The main character in What In HELL Is Bad? is largely invisible despite playing a big role in the story. While they are active and talkative, they aren’t displayed in most pictures, and do not have their own sprite. If they are displayed at all, it is just a part of their body that is rather generic in design.

It’s clear the story was written with a female MC in mind, as references to the MC’s body constantly implies female anatomy, but the ability to pick a male MC is presented at the start of the game and my little NB heart can’t say no. I assume there isn’t much difference in the text from one gender to the other, especially with the many references to ‘wetness’ and breast that were made about my male MC.

Sinful Suitors

Meet the men devils of your dreams who exist to fulfill your deepest desires. As I mentioned earlier, there are several other characters already in the game, but these four are likely the only ones we can romance for the time being. At least, I have only been able to “play” with the two of these four that I have, and no other characters on cards I hold.

Mammon rules over Tartaros, one of the seven countries in Hell. He is the Avatar of Greed, and along with a preferred “philia” it seems each devil comes with their own disorder. Mammon here is a compulsive hoarder. Not a big surprise since he carries the sin of greed. If you’re curious on what his preference is, the official name is pygophilia. What’s that? It means he loves ass a little more than the average person.

Satan is king of Gehenna. As the Avatar of Wrath, it’s no surprise that Gehenna is more violent than any other area in Hell. This devil enjoys some pain and punishment, both inflicting and receiving, so get your spanking hand ready because he’s more than up for that. Unfortunately, along with rage, it seems Satan suffers from depression as his disorder.

Beelzebub is ruler of Avisos, and as the Avatar of Gluttony, he enjoys excess in all forms. His mental disorder is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and smells really get him going. Yes, he has olfactophilia, meaning smells from the human body really rev his engine, especially those that emanate from sexual areas.

Leviathan is the beloved king of Hades. It’s strange that this devil who suffers from agoraphobia (fear of crowded places) is so well loved by his population, but there’s a saying that if you’re going to challenge Leviathan, then be prepared to fight all of Hades. Leviathan is the Avatar of Envy, and he even ends up envying himself. But if you’re into breath play, this devil is for you. Give his neck a little squeeze and he’ll be your best friend.

The Devil is in the Details

If you’ve played Prettybusy’s previous games, you might be familiar with their sense of humor and extensive world building. I certainly have been a fan since they burst into the international scene with Love Unholyc. If you’re not familiar, the writing staff is something I’d consider top tier. They have great comedic timing, and present their exceptionally supernatural stories in a way that is relatable and, dare I say, realistic.

The downside to that praise is that their translation and localization quality is often lacking. Love Unholyc was littered with so many grammatical and spelling errors that it was unplayable to some. So far, What In HELL Is Bad? has been significantly better than Love Unholyc‘s localization.

There is the occasional missing word that changes a sentence, or oddly phrased action that totally takes the mood out of what’s being described, but it isn’t bad overall. Compared to some localization companies that are asking for big bucks for their games, this free game is comparable to current releases. Take that how you will, because let’s be honest here, the bar is REALLY low for otome localizations.

Hell of a Game

There’s more to this horny game than thirsting over hot men, and that’s defeating angels intent on destroying Hell. What In HELL Is Bad? does run like a visual novel for the intro story, and most of the story, in fact, but there are defense games interspersed throughout, a “play room” to engage with your devils, and even a chat/messaging feature.

It can seem a little overwhelming at first blush, but the tutorial covers how the defense mini-game works. Just pay attention to the instructions, which were flawless, by the way. This is where the gacha cards come in. You can collect items for your devils, or devils themselves to add to your roster for your defense game.

The cards also open up the “play room” for ‘L’ or Legendary cards. So far I have only seen Leviathan, Beelzebub, Mammon, and Satan with L cards. The ‘S’ rank cards I have aren’t available for the play room. In the play room, you can squeeze, stroke, or lick your devil lover to bring them to climax. Full on moaning in this mini-game, so be aware.

It took me a minute to figure out how it worked. You want to hold down on the places the card indicates on the devil’s body. There are two gauges, one is your enjoyment, one is your devil’s. You want to get the second bar to hit top before yours does, which takes some finagling to manage since your bar rises faster. Basically, hold, release, hold, release, maybe change spots, hold, release as needed until he comes.

The messaging feature said you’d be contacted up to three times a day by a character, but if you don’t respond soon enough, they might not get back to you until later. I’m not yet certain if this increases as you get further into the game and meet more characters, but for now I’ve received one message and responded, and it was an okay experience. Nothing big for my first day when everyone is just curious who this human in the realm of Hell is.

The Bottom Line

What In HELL Is Bad? had a rough start with many delays that brought the release six months later than originally scheduled. And while I write this article, the game has been out for just over 12 hours, meaning we’re in the middle of bug central, because there is never a flawless launch for any game. I’d caution players that might not have the patience to be on the front line of discovering just how broken a game can be from engaging at the moment, and maybe wait a week or two.

However, if errors, crashes, and server overloads are something you can overlook, and you’re interested in spanking and squeezing some devils, or REALLY love tower defense games, I’d suggest giving it a go. If you get in early, and deal with the bugs and service interruptions, you usually find the company is willing to compensate beyond the inconvenience caused to the player.

I think the story is interesting, and I am enjoying playing with my boys already. I also think the localization is pretty solid, though there are clearly some issues, and I don’t expect those to be fixed based off Prettybusy’s past work. And the art is something I enjoy, along with hearing men moan, so I’m totally down hard for this game.

You’ll like What In HELL Is Bad? if you like: Skinship; sexy stories; defense games; voice acting throughout the story; engaging in play that is often considered shameful without shame; and 72 devils that will all love and adore you.
